Opinions on being in love

Recently, I read "The fault in our stars" by John Green and one thing really stood out for me. When he describes falling in love being like falling asleep; Slowly at first and then all at once. To me, this is the essence of being in love. When you make a conscious effort to love someone, you don't love them 100% right at the beginning, but slowly, you do. I think, too often we are bound by our perceptions of what things should be, of what type of person my girlfriend/boyfriend should be, of what my job should be. that we miss what has been given to us right from the start.
